Make plans to attend this year’s Virginia Arts of the Book Center Raucous Auction for the chance to bid on fascinating works of book art, such as the Atlas of Vanishing Knowledge! The Atlas is the VABC’s 2012 collaborative project, in which 28 member artists used traditional printing methods to create a part-reference work and part-commonplace book. Aimed at informing a world doomed to vanish in the 2012 apocalypse, this book is a “flawed but urgent bulwark against the erosions of time and human memory.”
At only 1” thick with 156 Rives Lightweight pages measuring 4”x6,” the Atlas is truly a sight to behold. Imagine the level of precision necessary to print traditionally on such a minute canvas! Further, it is hand-bound, cloth-covered, and Coptic-stitched. A team effort, this book’s every aspect was imagined and constructed by dedicated artists. Add it to your collection by making a bid online or at the Raucous Auction on November 18th, with the full knowledge that your support will also help the VABC continue to collaborative to produce such exquisite work in the future.
